Intentions always determines out come, even in prayer. Many never see any desired outcomes of prayer because the intentions going into prayer were wrong. Since tefillah is about bonding, it only makes sense that our intentions in prayer should be more about knowing the Creator rather than asking for things from the Creator. After all, He already knows what we have need of before we ask.
